Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
