Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
